Best Midfield Studio Monitors
Introduction
Studio monitors are essential tools in any recording setup because so many of your decisions depend on what you hear from them. That’s why accuracy and proper placement of your studio monitors are so important.
Midfield studio monitors are designed to be placed at least six feet away from the listener. They deliver louder sound, deeper bass, and a larger sweet spot for monitoring. However, they can also be more affected by acoustic cancellations and resonance.
A “flat” frequency response means the sound stays consistent across a range of frequencies. In reality, a perfectly flat response isn’t possible, so a small range of variation—typically between 3dB and 24dB—is considered acceptable.
Because of this, good room design and acoustic treatment become crucial when you’re using midfield studio monitors. If you want to learn more about these monitors and how to find the best ones, keep reading for our list.
Just a quick note: we’ll be sharing these midfield studio monitor reviews in no particular order. They’re randomized because we don’t want to rank them from best to worst.
Listed below are our Top 9 Best Midfield Studio Monitors:
1. ADAM Audio S3H
The S3H builds on the success of ADAM Audio’s acclaimed studio monitors, the S3A and S3X-H. Like its predecessors, it sets new standards for technical innovation and design. Its dual 7-inch bass drivers, powered by a 500 W Class D amplifier, deliver flawless reproduction of frequencies all the way down to 30 Hz.
ADAM Audio’s newly developed DCH is a 4-inch hybrid dome/cone mid-range driver, powered by a 300 W Class D amplifier. It handles audio above 250 Hz and below 3 kHz, with its advanced hybrid design combining the sonic strengths of both cone and soft-dome drivers in a single, one-piece unit.
No matter your preferred output stage, the S3H’s vibrant authenticity inspires creativity for producers, engineers, and musicians everywhere. Its sound remains remarkably easy on the ears, even during long, uninterrupted sessions.
Frequencies above 3 kHz are handled by a modern combination: the S-ART treble driver (handmade at ADAM Audio’s Berlin facility), the new precision HPS waveguide, and a 50 W Class A/B amplifier. All this innovation results in an impressively clear, three-dimensional soundscape with a generous sweet spot.
With its powerful amplification and three-way design (optimized for horizontal use), the S3H was created as a midfield monitor but works equally well in more compact listening environments. As with all ADAM Audio designs, the sound is punchy yet musical, with crystal-clear reproduction of those all-important mid-range frequencies.

- Frequency range: 32 to 50,000 Hz
- Maximum level: 126 dB (pair 1 m)
- Integrated DSP processor
- Adjustable input sensitivity

Conclusion
If you really want to know how your music actually sounds, then studio monitors are a must-have. To make the right choice, you’ll need to consider the size of your room as well as your budget.
When it comes to picking the best model from our list, our personal favorite is the ATC SCM50ASL. Unfortunately, we can’t get our hands on them due to their price, but we were lucky enough to try them out briefly and test several mixes. Compared to the other speakers, we’d definitely choose them—not to say the rest are bad. On the contrary, they’re all excellent speakers; it just depends on what you’re looking for.
Upgrading to a pair of studio monitors is one of the most impactful changes you can make to your recording and mixing setup. If you have any questions about this topic, feel free to leave a comment below!
What would be the idea speaker size, watt etc for a 20×10 room. The width is 10 so there is about a 10 feet distance from the listening position to the back wall and about 5 feet gaps on each side is the listing position. Pls advice
Thanks
Hi Habib,
It is best to look more deeply into the model you like for your room and investigate more deeply from thereon. You have the best metrics for your room and you’ll be able to find the user manual from the desired speaker and find all the numbers you need. We just selected the models we thought are good for midfield speakers – from there on, it is your decision 🙂
Thanks for the comment!
